Fremantle wingman Nathan O’Driscoll has informed the club he wants to explore his options in the trade period after falling out of favour in the Dockers’ finals campaign.
It comes as Fremantle withdrew a multi-year offer they had on the table for the 24-year-old, who played a career-high 17 games this season to take his tally to 55.
O’Driscoll, was drafted by the club with pick No.27 in the 2020 draft, is out of contract and had drawn interest from rival clubs including the Western Bulldogs, who are believed to have cooled on the Perth product as they turn their attention to getting superstar Zak Butters out of Port Adelaide.
The left footer was a mainstay for the majority of the Dockers’ season, playing every game from round 10 but was dropped in the wake of Fremantle’s qualifying final loss to Hawthorn and did not earn his place back in the remainder of their September campaign.
Fremantle executive general manager of football Joe Brierty said O’Driscoll would “explore his options through the trade period”.
“Our discussion with Nathan and his management at the moment is he’ll look to explore his options through the trade period and then we’ll work through what that looks like,” he said.
“We’ve (been) in discussions across the entire year, and like every player’s right, Nathan and his management were entertaining and exploring options.
“We put some things on the table to Nathan . . . as we got to the back end of the year, we made the decision with him and his management that we would just hold off any further discussions until the season concluded.
“We revisited that this week and agreed with both parties that he would entertain and explore what that looks like. We’ll have those discussions with him and see where that proceeds to go in the trade period.
“When we said we’d park any further discussions, we’ve said that obviously that deal is no longer there. As a result of that and the discussions post, he can have to look to have those discussions with those clubs.”
It comes as the Dockers continue to make changes to their list. Veteran Bailey Banfield was this week delisted alongside Sam Sturt, Ollie Murphy and Ryda Luke.
Jaeger O’Meara and rookie forward Leon Kickett are believed to have earned one-year contracts, while Brierty confirmed son-of-a-gun Jaren Carr would remain on the list next year but the exact logistics were still being worked through.
Carr has not featured in the AFL across his two seasons at the club after being drafted out of South Fremantle with pick No.63 in the 2024 draft.
“We’ve made a commitment to Jaren that he’ll have a contract with the club. What that looks like will depend on the trade period,” Brierty said.
“If there’s opportunity for him to stay on the primary list, we’ll look at that. But if not, then the most likely option would be that he’d be delisted and guaranteed a rookie contract.
“We’ve loved his development and the way he’s gone about it. It’s just one of those things, with our list spots being pretty tight, at the moment and not knowing what might happen over the trade period.”
