He said the board had come to the decision following a damning independent report into Carlton’s football department.

“After careful consideration was taken and the necessary time to absorb the findings of the review... it was made clear that the decision needed to be made to part ways with David Teague,” Sayers said.

Assistant coach Dale Amos was also shown the door on Thursday.

Four of the eight board positions will change, with Chris Judd, Jeanne Pratt and Christopher Townshend joining outgoing President Mark LoGiudice in relinquishing their positions.

Sayers said the Blues’ “number one priority” was to improve the on-field performance of the club.

“It is what our members expect and it is our responsibility to do everything we can to deliver on that,” he said.

Sayers called it the “perfect time” for the football club to reset and that both the AFL and AFLW playing groups are well placed to pursue on field success in the coming seasons.

“The primary focus from this day forward will be about sustained and uncompromising high performance,” he said.

“Winning footy games, playing ourselves into finals and giving ourselves the greatest chance of winning premierships.

“That is the clear outcome we are pursing and we will follow that passionately.

“Our expectation, based on the list we have, is that we are looking to make finals in 2022.”

Carlton finished 13th on the ladder with 8 wins and 14 losses, including their last three games as the axe drop loomed for the besieged coach.

The high-profile, big-money recruits of Adam Saad and Zac Williams have failed to deliver for the Blues in 2021, putting further pressure on the list management at the club.

Four senior coaches, including Teague, Brendon Bolton, Mick Malthouse and Brett Ratten have been sacked by the club in nine years.
