For neutral fans, the sight of Eddie Betts returning and producing a vintage highlight play was pretty to watch.

For Freo fans, it was tough to watch amid a second-quarter Carlton surge at Marvel Stadium.

Betts provided the clip-worthy moment of the opening half as the Blues jumped Fremantle, taking on a string of Dockers defenders before putting in a a Goal of the Week nomination.

Playing his first game of the season and the 200th of his Carlton career, Betts crumbed from a marking contest, spun and finished on his left foot in spectacular style.

It capped a monster second term for the home side, with Carlton booting eight of the last nine goals of the opening half to carry a 35-point lead into the main break.

The news was made even worse for Freo when young defender Hayden Young limped off with a corked thigh after a collision with Levi Casboult.

Young failed to return for the start of the third term, with Liam Henry subbed into the game.

The Dockers earlier opted not to make a late change, leaving potential debutant Josh Treacy on the sidelines despite flying the forward to Melbourne.
