Ashes 2025-26: Scott Boland lauds potential debutants Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett

Marathon spells at good pace from one and electric counter-attack from the other.
Australian seamer Scott Boland is excited by what potential Test debutants Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett could bring if they’re called upon this Friday.
The Ashes finally lands in Perth this week, and Weatherald and Doggett look all but locked in as Australia’s next two Test caps.
Boland has played a stack of Sheffield Shield against Doggett and even shared the new ball with him for an Indigenous side back in 2018.
Doggett has catapulted into the frame after veteran quick Josh Hazlewood sustained a hamstring setback.
The Aussies’ depth has been tested with injuries to Hazlewood and captain Pat Cummins, and they would be safeguarding the fitness of Boland and Mitchell Starc.
But Boland said Doggett was the type of bowler stand-in captain Steve Smith could reliably deploy for extended periods.
“I think (Doggett) brings real skill, he’s a fast outswing bowler and he’s someone who can bowl really long spells,” Boland said.
Marnus Labuschagne didn’t choose to face the new ball in the nets, which could suggest that Jake Weatherald is in line to open the batting in the first Test.
“When he’s playing for South Australia, he can bowl 20 to 25 overs in a day. They push their quicks a little bit more than some others do.
“He’s fit and if he gets the nod it would be exciting to see.”
Weatherald is likely to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in place of youngster Sam Konstas.
Boland has seen his fair share of Weatherald too, bowling to the flashy left-hander for nearly a decade at domestic level.
He said Weatherald was a player you needed to prepare for and expected him to put the pressure back on England if given the chance.
“I have played against (Weatherald) for the best part of eight years I reckon and he’s always been an opening batter who can take the game away from you in quick time,” he said.

“I think he’s one of those guys you need to be well prepared against and it would be exciting if he plays on Friday, it will be exciting to see him bat.
“He can be someone who will take the pressure off a lot of the other guys.”
Boland had an arduous Ashes tour in 2023, as England’s top order put an emphasis on hitting him out of the attack.
He said he had “reflected on that tour a fair bit” and was confident execution was his only downfall.
“There will obviously be tweaks to my game plan and what I want to do, but I don’t think I need to change too much,” he said.
“I think I just need to execute a bit better.”
