Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir has described the SCG surface as unsafe as pressure mounts on the AFL to move Sunday’s game between the Dockers and Sydney away from the venue.

The AFL has spoken to the Dockers after players from both Sydney and the Western Bulldogs constantly slipped over during Friday night’s game.

Bulldogs wingman Bailey Williams was lucky to avoid injury when his foot got stuck in the surface and his leg twisted awkwardly. Longmuir said he was worried watching the match.

“The moment my brain goes to ‘that’s unsafe for players’ I have a concern. I went there on Friday night,” Longmuir said.

“I thought at times it was unsafe to play on. I thought of the Bailey Williams one. We can’t put players out there and risk their safety if the ground’s not right. I thought it was a bit unsafe the other night, especially down the left hand side.”

The SCG surface hasn’t recovered from a concert being held there in April and wet weather has provided extra challenges for ground staff. More rain is expected this week.

The league could consider moving the game to the Olympic Stadium or Greater Western Sydney’s home ground if the SCG is ruled out of action. But only one game has been played at the Olympic Stadium since 2016.

Longmuir said the club would accept whatever decision the AFL makes.

“I don’t make those decisions. I fully understand that both teams are playing on the same surface so if the AFL deem it safe to play, we will play and I won’t speak another moment of it. But I thought it was unsafe the other night,” he said.

“The AFL have approached us and they’re going to look at it, like they should. They’ve got the experts and we will be guided by them.”

The Dockers won their sixth game in a row on Sunday after fighting back from 14 points down during the final quarter to beat St Kilda 11.15 (81) to 9.15 (69).

Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy stood up in the final quarter with three goals between them as Fremantle ended St Kilda’s stoppage dominance from the previous three quarters.

“I thought Sean dominated the ruck in the last quarter,” Longmuir said.

“Our mids got to work and I thought our second and third efforts and ability to hunt the ground ball which they were dominant in all day around clearance, got on our terms in the last quarter.”
