Brennan Cox’s hopes of playing in Fremantle’s push towards a maiden premiership are still alive, according to coach Justin Longmuir.
In an interview with 7NEWS on Monday night, Longmuir said Cox trained well with Peel Thunder at the weekend and would not rule the defender out of the Dockers’ preliminary final clash with Sydney on Friday night.
Cox will have to get through a crucial main training session with teammates at Cockburn on Tuesday if he is any chance of joining teammates on the flight to Sydney on Wednesday.
He could also feature in the Thunder’s WAFL grand final against Claremont at Optus Stadium on Sunday, which would give him match practice before the Dockers’ potential appearance in the AFL decider the following weekend.
The 28-year-old has not played at any level since injuring his calf early in Fremantle’s round 24 loss to Carlton last month.
Longmuir said they also still need to weigh up whether or not to play three key defenders in the preliminary final with Sydney, who boast a tall forward line including Coleman medallist Charlie Curnow, Logan McDonald and Hayden McLean.
Alex Pearce and Oscar McDonald have held down those roles in the back-end of the season.
“We haven’t made a call on Coxy yet. He did a rehab session and joined in with the Peel training well on the weekend,” Longmuir said.
“Clearly tomorrow’s main training session will be an indicator whether he’s right to go and then we’ll sit down at match committee and discuss the team and whether we go with three talls or not.
“There’s still a bit of water to go under the bridge with Coxy yet.”
Longmuir said injury-prone midfielder Hayden Young is all clear to play after copping a pair of knocks in the epic semifinal victory over Geelong on Friday night.
“He’s fine, he just got a couple of corkies. One to his shoulder and one to his quad, which looked a bit worse than what they are,” he said.
“He was jumping out of his skin today, he’ll main train tomorrow and be ready to go.
Longmuir gave credit to the Swans for replacing banned stars Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice and James Jordon with “really mature players” and said they would have to be at the top of their game to knock them off, despite their ravaged line-up.
Meanwhile, Swans coach Dean Cox is weighing up a major selection call ahead of Friday’s contest with Justin McInerney a chance to make a long-awaited return.
The hard-runner has not featured since round 13 after injuring his hamstring.
“It’s a strong discussion,” he said.
“We have monitored his training over the past month or six weeks about what he’s actually done, and how much he’s done. He’s ticked every box all the way through.
“We’ll watch our main session on Wednesday to make sure he gets through that and then sit down with Justin and the medical team and coaches and go through that process.”
It would be a much-needed boost for the Swans who could also call on forward Joel Amarty after he was named as an emergency last week as he works through his Achilles injury.
