VideoAFL: Brett Ratten joined the AFL 360 desk to discuss the recent news of Paddy Ryder, stating that they are happy to wait for as long as he needs.

Geelong veteran Joel Selwood expects to see more AFL stars being rested from matches this season as clubs seek to manage a range of altered factors that will test players physically.

That includes a return to full-length quarters and a reduced cap on interchange rotations - down from 90 last year to 75.

A shorter-than-usual off-season, owing to 2020’s late finish, coupled with a full home-and-away schedule will also challenge players’ fitness and the depth of playing squads.

Additionally, if preseason fixtures are any guide, the speed and flow of games could increase on the back of rules designed to promote fast ball movement, such as the new order that requires players to stand still while manning the mark.

Resting players to the extent that happens where required during busier sporting schedules overseas, such as in European soccer, has not historically been commonplace in the AFL.

Nor has it been as readily accepted when it has occurred.

But Selwood said fans could expect to see more of it throughout what is sure to be a demanding 2021 campaign.

“We should all be open to it,” Selwood said.

“We’ll play that as it comes out and that will be a decision by the player and the coaching staff, along with the sports science staff, too.

“I understand that Geelong supporters and footy fans out there don’t want to hear that the best players are going to sit out, but it’s a bloody tough game.

“Coming off the back of last year, too, we’d rather get some consistency on how we’re going rather than doing a little hamstring that might sit us out for a period of time.”

Selwood was limited to 15 of a possible 21 games last season as he battled his own hamstring issues.

He missed four consecutive matches late in the season, but returned in time to play all four of the Cats’ finals.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed a strong preparation for his 15th AFL season and is ready to hit the ground running against Adelaide in round one.

“I’ve been healthy, which is good. Not breaking records, but healthy and out there with the boys (during preseason),” Selwood said.

“It’s been really refreshing off the back of last year to be all training together again.

“It’s been good fun and I’m definitely ready for games now.”
