Co-trainers Chris and Michael Gangemi have high hopes Written Matter can deliver them a repeat class jump coup by winning today’s Listed $100,000 Raconteur Stakes (1400m) at Belmont.

The gelding, to be ridden by Shaun McGruddy, faces a sharp grade rise against quality opposition after impressive wins in midweek races over 1200m and 1300m at his only two starts.

Last year the Gangemis pulled up off a second-up $500,000 Karrakatta Plate victory with Ima Single Man, who had won at a Wednesday meeting in his debut less than three weeks earlier.

“Written Matter is taking on strong rivals in his first preparation,” Chris Gangemi said yesterday, “But we think he’s good.

“He’s been in top order at trackwork this week and we couldn’t be happier with him. He’s set to be highly competitive when stepping up to better company.”

Gangemi said Written Tycoon, bought for $100,000 by a syndicate at Magic Millions’ 2019 Perth Yearling sale, would also target the Belmont Guineas (1600m) in a fortnight.

Ladbrokes installed the gelding, a son of leading sire Written Tycoon, at $10 in Raconteur wagering.

William Pike’s mount Graceful Girl, owned by Bob and Sandra Peters, tightened to $2.25 favouritism after confirmation yesterday she would be a Raconteur runner.

The Grant and Alana Williams-trained filly, a Belmont winner over 1200m last Saturday, was at $3.40 in Ladbrokes’ opening betting on the Raconteur.

Bob Peters said early in the week he was undecided if the filly would back-up and a final call would not be made until race eve.

“I wanted to delay a decision until seeing how she progressed after last Saturday’s race,” Peters said yesterday.

“We don’t normally start them twice in seven days.

“However, Graceful Girl has come through well and the Raconteur should suit her.”

The filly, who will be racing third-up today, has won three races and run three places from six starts.

Billy Ain’t Silly, a $4 second favourite for the Raconteur, has won four of his past five races and continues to please trainer Colin Webster.

“He’s working nicely and is holding form,” Webster said yesterday. “Our horse is well in with 56.5kg.”

Co-trainer Ben Pearce said Allmamoney ($14) should finish powerfully.

“She’s going super,” Pearce said. “The filly can run a big race ahead of starts over longer distances in the Guineas and Oaks.”
