Top northwest trainer Tim Pike is poised to add another trophy to his cabinet in the $30,000 Greatland Marble Bar Cup (1600m) on Saturday when he saddles three of the eight runners for the headline event of the once-a-year racetrack.
Pike, who won the Broome Sprint with Border Control in 2025, also went close 12 months ago in this race when second with Warby Ranges, and he has added to his arsenal this year, taking that horse alongside Another Nephew and Reginald for the cup.
“The Marble Bar Cup would be a pretty special one to win,” Pike told Racing WA.
“I’ve had a few cracks at it since I started training and it’s just one of the trophies I’ve always been aiming at getting.
“Dad’s won one before, so I’d love to get one myself to equal it up.”
Pike is the son of famed northwest conditioner Tom Pike, who has won virtually all events on the region’s country racing scene.
Marble Bar rises for the occasion, increasing the town’s population from 200 to around 2000 at the time of the meeting.
The track plays host to their annual “undie run”, where competitors strip (almost) bare after the final horse race and pelt up the Marble Bar home straight.
“The atmosphere is amazing, it’s one of the best cup days out in the country,” Pike said.
“The number of people who come out to the races is phenomenal. For a place that’s pretty isolated and not much out there, they get a great crowd.”
“These one-off race meetings are really important for the community.
“Everyone loves to get on course and it’s great to see a fair few numbers and runners in big fields. It should be a good day.”
Another Nephew ($4jf) shares the topline of betting with Magic Mikey ($4jf) after placing at each of his past three starts.
The Sizzling five-year-old has had just two runs at Pike’s home track of Port Hedland and has finished second in each of them.
Reginald ($5.50) rebounded to top form in the Ladies Bracelet (1611m) at Roebourne a month ago and the Casino Prince seven-year-old has not been seen since.
Warby Ranges ($9.50) enters the contest as the least favoured of Pike’s runners despite that positive display last year.
He has had four runs since resuming and has expressed gradual improvement on each occasion, finishing fifth and less than three lengths from Immortal Shield in a 1406m event at Roebourne last month.
