New Zealand skier Alice Robinson has nearly pulled off another fine World Cup win at the Slovakian resort of Jasna, getting pipped for victory in the giant slalom only by home favourite Petra Vlhova.

The Sydney-born teenager, rated one of the most exciting prospects in the sport, had a storming second run on Sunday, climbing from seventh position to second.

The 19-year-old Robinson finished ahead of third-placed US great Mikaela Shiffrin, who'd led after the first run, for her best placing of the season.

But Vlhova, second after the opening leg, powered down the piste to beat Robinson by 0.16 seconds.

It was another impressive performance from Robinson, who moved with her family from Sydney to Queenstown when she was four.

Only three weeks ago, she finished fourth in the world championships giant slalom in Cortina, just missing out on becoming the first New Zealand skier to medal at the global event.

After Shiffrin had failed to beat her time, Vlhova fell on her back in celebration at the end of her home race and fought back tears following the 19th win of her career.

Italian Marta Bassino, who won four giant slaloms this season, locked up the overall season's title in the discipline with a race to spare after she finished fourth.

In the overall standings, Vlhova closed the gap on leader Lara Gut-Behrami to 36 points, with two slaloms in Sweden coming up on Friday and Saturday.
