Matildas forward Remy Siemsen eyeing opportunity to string together consistent performances for national team

After a stop-start international career to this point, Matildas forward Remy Siemsen is pushing herself to cement a spot in the Australia squad ahead of next year’s Women’s Asian Cup. 25-year-old Siemsen notched the 10th cap of her career in Perth at HBF Park and is hoping to add to it against Panama in Bunbury this Saturday. After making her debut in 2022, Siemsen has been unable to garner consistent selection for the Matildas and missed out on the Women’s World Cup in 2023. It has taught the former Sydney FC star to appreciate every chance she does get to pull on the green and gold jersey and motivated her to be part of the Asian Cup next year. “I haven’t been in the national team consistently for the past couple of years, and I really wanted to enjoy myself and play my natural game and not get in my head,” Siemsen said of her start against Slovenia. “I’ve definitely got my sights set on that Asian Cup selection, but I also want to take it camp-by-camp and game-by-game, and not get too far ahead of myself. “It’s easy to get ahead of yourself when there’s a tournament at home next year, I was so close to making that World Cup squad, and sadly, missed out on that.” Siemsen spent two seasons in the Women’s Super League with Leicester City, but credited her return to the Swedish Damallsvenskan in 2024 with Kristianstads DFF for helping her get back into national team reckoning. “We play international players, a lot of players that are at the Euros at the moment, so every week is a competitive game,” Siemsen said. “You’re versing top-class players week-to-week, as well as top players in my own team who are currently at the Euros too. “Every training session is competitive, you’re fighting for your spot, and that ultimately develops you, because you’re competing every single session, every single day. “They’re a very tactical country in the way they like to play. It’s quite similar to how we’re actually playing now, so it was a nice bridge over into the national team.” Siemsen is eyeing up another start against Panama this weekend, and said there was an extra element of excitement at being part of the first Matildas squad to travel to Bunbury. “It’s so important we get to meet all the fans from all across Australia. They’re so important to us and we love seeing our fans in big cities, but also in the regional areas,” she said. “It’s going to be an exciting game, Panama are not an easy opposition, they were obviously in the World Cup a couple of years ago here in Perth. “We know they’re a tough opposition, it will be a tough game, and it’ll be great to see the fans and hopefully we can put on another good performance.”
