Netballer Emma Cosh has given up a full-time teaching role to concentrate on making West Coast Fever’s wing attack position her own in 2021.

Cosh was one of the surprise packets last year, starting the season as a training partner for the Fever at goal attack.

But the opportunity to play in the midcourt came when Fever’s wing attack Ingrid Colyer went down with a season-ending knee injury in round nine.

Now a contracted part of the Fever team, Cosh said her teaching role at Governor Stirling Senior High School had to take a back seat to her sporting career.

“I actually got permanency in my teaching role at the end of last year, but I’ve dropped down to a couple of half days a week,” Cosh said.

“I didn’t want to take too much on because I want to make the 2021 season my main priority.”

Cosh admitted moving into the wing attack position was “tough” to start her Super Netball career, but quickly impressed coach Stacey Marinkovich and earned player of the match honours in the preliminary final win over the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

“I’m hoping to play at wing attack again this season,” she said.

“We have spoken a little bit about the goal attack role, so I have both those positions to look forward to, but this season I am mainly focusing on wing attack.

“I’m working on my variety in the wing attack position and also a big one for me is strength, so I’m working closely with the Performance Coach and making sure I’m getting stronger so I’m ready to take on that role.”

The Fever will start 2021 three wins behind the rest of the competition, after Super Netball handed the club the biggest ever salary cap penalty last month.

But Cosh said finals were still the focus for last year’s grand finalists.

“It was really disappointing to find out about the breaches,” Cosh admitted.

“We’re just going to treat (the points deduction) as another challenge and give it our all and make sure we’re just focused on the 2021 season.”
