Perth Scorchers WBBL coach Becky Grundy says side ready for challenge of gruelling four-State road trip

Perth Scorchers WBBL coach Becky Grundy says her side is ready for the challenge of a gruelling road trip which will see them take on four different sides in four different States. After copping a 10-wicket thumping from star-studded Sydney Sixers in their opening game of the season at the WACA Ground on Sunday night, the Scorchers headed to Queensland on Monday ahead of their clash with Brisbane Heat at Allan Border Field on Wednesday. They will then move on to Adelaide to come up against Melbourne Stars on Friday, head to Melbourne to take on Adelaide Strikers on Sunday and complete their stint away from home in Sydney next Wednesday against Sydney Thunder. Grundy said the trip would be testing but she was happy to have her side’s away games played in blocks, rather than regularly criss-cross the country. “We’re used to it, we’re used to the travel. It’s something that we talk about, it’s something that we embrace,” Grundy said. “When you’re over east and you’re just going from State to State over east, it’s quite nice. Personally, I love when we’re on the road, because all we’re thinking about is cricket and we’re all together. It helps with that connection piece. “That’s the nature of (the) WBBL and we’ll take it on.” The Scorchers’ road trip has two games which will form parts of double-headers, including a clash with the Stars in Adelaide where they will be the nominal home side. Grundy said her team would prefer to be playing in front of their own fans but they would make do with the situation as best they could. “It’s above my pay grade, in terms of the logistical nightmares of organising a schedule like (the) WBBL,” she said. “We know that the crowd’s not going to be special there, so we’ll have to make some noise of our own.” Grundy said she expected a list which features a blend of experience and youth to be well-suited to confront the challenges of their time away from home. “On the road, with the international players and the overseas (players), they’re used to the travel and the hotels,” she said. “They’ll get around our young kids, but our young kids bring that energy and the excitement and the love of the game that sometimes you can forget about. “It’ll be a really cool experience for them to both lean on each other.”
