Competitive BMX riders from across the Pilbara clashed in Port Hedland over the weekend, as round one of the North West Pilbara Crown Super Series got underway.

In all, 180 riders competed in rapid succession around the BMX track, with stand-outs able to qualify for State and national events.

The biggest class was the nine-year-old boys which was won by Karratha BMX Club’s Nate Robinson.

Another Karratha boy Brennan Kirkwood won the 10s boys event closely followed by Hedland’s Joel Mclean.

Superclass women’s was dominated by Jasmine Kilmartin and Superclass men’s was a battle between Karratha’s Blake White and Tom Price’s Travis Steward over the five races.

In the 15-17 boys Ty Kilmartin never dropped lower than second place in the five rounds and in 13+ women’s Sophie Taylor claimed first every round.

Hedland BMX Club coaching co-ordinator Darren Marlow said there were fast speeds in the highly competitive groups. “The super class is pretty fast, the guys in 15-17 are normally faster as the boys don’t really care about safety so they put it all on the line,” he said.

Mr Marlow said the club put a lot of effort into getting ready for the event, particularly to repair the track after Cyclone Veronica.

Round two will be held in Karratha, round three in Newman and round four in Tom Price.
