Australian trap shooter Laetisha Scanlan has confirmed her international status with a World Cup silver medal in the United Arab Emirates.

The Victorian was narrowly edged out of the title by American Aeriel Alease Skinner, with Italy's Alessia Iezzi taking bronze.

In a nail-biting final conducted in sweltering conditions in Al Ain, Scanlan held a two-shot lead after the first seven of 10 rotations but her accuracy slipped in the eighth and ninth when hitting three of five targets in each round.

The American shot two perfect rounds to snatch a two-shot lead going in to the final rotation.

"I've had a great 2019 and I am looking forward to a successful 2020."

The 29-year-old now has her sights on July's Tokyo Olympics, having made her debut at the Rio Games alongside teammate Catherine Skinner.

Scanlan shot 10 of 15 targets in 2016 to finish fifth overall while Skinner went on to win gold for Australia.

She is also aiming to secure Tokyo selection in the mixed team trap alongside James Willett.

The pair secured that title at the World Shotgun Championship in Italy in July by edging Russia's Iuliia Saveleva and Maksim Smykov, the result determined in a shoot-off after both teams hit 44 targets in the gold medal match.
