VideoFormer Sydney Swans skipper Dane Rampe has retired after 14 seasons and 289 games, with the 36-year-old admitting the Pullman Hotel scandal significantly impacted his decision-making about retirement timing.

Sydney is facing another off-field crisis with a senior player in trouble with the law after failing a roadside drug test.

The club revealed on Wednesday that forward Tom Papley had failed a roadside drug test, with the AFL and the Swans awaiting further results.

In a statement sent out by the club, the Swans revealed Papley was pulled over in New South Wales on Monday for driving with a suspended licence due to an outstanding parking fine.

During the stop, a random drug test returned a positive finding, with a second sample taken away for analysis, with the results still outstanding.

Papley immediately informed the club of the incident, with the AFL also made aware, with the Swans making no further comment as the police continue their analysis.

New South Wales policed realesed a statement confirming he had tested positive to methylamphetamine.

“At about 10.30am on Monday, traffic and highway patrol officers stopped a vehicle on Lang Road, Centennial Park, for the purposes of a random testing,” NSW Police said.

“The driver — a 30-year-old man — was spoken to, with checks revealing his licence was suspended.

“He was subject to a roadside drug test which allegedly returned a positive result for methylamphetamine. A secondary sample of oral fluid was taken for further analysis.

“He was issued a court attendance notice for drive, licence suspended under s 66 fines act, to appear before Waverly Local Court on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and a 24-hour driving probation.”

Should Papley’s second sample confirm a positive drugs finding, the 216-gamer is likely to face an AFL penalty separate from any legal sanction.

The 30-year-old is the latest senior Swan to fall afoul of the law after the Pullman Five derailed their finals campaign.

Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon and Riley Bice were suspended after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault at a hotel following a victory over Essendon.

While Bice was later cleared by police, all five players were suspended from the Club following the alleged incident for breaching behavioural standards.

Victoria Police have not laid any charges in relation to the incident, and this masthead is not suggesting the players are guilty of any wrongdoing, just that they are assisting police with enquiries.

A decision on whether criminal charges will be laid against the four players is expected in November, following a review of the brief of evidence by the Office of Public Prosecutions.

The saga saw Blakey request a trade to North Melbourne, with Papley making no secret of his desire to make his feelings known to the former Swan when they meet as opponents next year.

“Love him like a brother, but Mr Dillon please put out the fixture ASAP,” he posted to social media.

The goalkicking livewire had just returned to Sydney after an off-season trip to the USA.
