East Fremantle veteran Sharon Wong crowned 2022 Dhara Kerr Medallist at WAFL Women’s Awards Night

East Fremantle veteran Sharon Wong will carry the title of being the league’s best player into Saturday’s WAFLW grand final after being crowned the 2022 Dhara Kerr medallist on Monday night.

Runner-up last season on 14 votes, Wong surged to the top of the leaderboard this year to claim her maiden league fairest and best.

Wong finished on 18 votes, four votes ahead of East Fremantle Ashleigh Gomes and reigning Dhara Kerr medallist Ella Smith who finished equal-second on 14 votes.

Subiaco pair Tarnica Golisano and Jayme Harken (both 13 votes) rounded out the top five.

Described by those close to her as “best player to never have never been drafted,” Wong also has a long history of success at the Sharks.

The 32-year-old is a three-time East Fremantle fairest and best and has also played a part in four Sharks’ premierships which could swell to five in Saturday’s grand final against Claremont.

This year, Wong took her game to yet another level, averaging 18 touches and nearly seven tackles a game.

The undefeated Sharks dominated proceedings, taking out two other major awards.

First-year coach Matt Templeton was named the WAFLW Coach of the Year and Port Adelaide AFLW signing Julia Teakle won the Cath Boyce Rookie of the Year award after kicking 26 goals in her debut season.

Peel turned West Coast forward Kate Bartlett won the Joanne Huggins Leading Goal Kicker Award for the second year running after kicking a record-breaking 39 goals to earn her spot back on an AFLW list.

West Perth’s Mia Russo, 14, won both the Rogers Cup fairest and best and the Rogers Cup rising star award while Swan Districts sharpshooter Carys D’Addario took home the leading goal kicker award.

Swan Districts utility Amber Ugle-Hayward won the WAFLW Reserves fairest and best while East Fremantle’s Jessie McDonald took out the leading goal kicker award.
