West Coast have axed second-year forward Archer Reid, while defender-turned-midfielder Brady Hough will miss the clash against Carlton because of illness.

It comes as top Eagles draftee Bo Allan is set to play a full AFL game for just the second time, having been the tactical sub in their previous two clashes, while Clay Hall and Bailey Williams have also earned a recall.

Hough was withdrawn from the squad on Friday afternoon, joining Reid and premiership defender Tom Cole (hamstring) out of the team to tackle the Blues at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

It is a blow for the one-win Eagles, with Hough having played 37-consecutive games — the longest current streak at the Eagles, having made the transition from lockdown defender to midfielder this season under first-year coach Andrew McQualter.

Williams, a forward/ruck, returns for his eighth game of the season and first since the round 11 defeat to Adelaide, joining mid-season rookie Tom McCarthy and inside midfielder Hall in the team.

Reid makes way after he was subbed out in the last quarter of the Eagles’ 10-point defeat to North Melbourne down in Bunbury at the weekend, having gone goalless from four disposals.

Hough is coming off 17 disposals and eight tackles against the Kangaroos, having also successfully tagged star Geelong recruit and Brownlow fancy Bailey Smith, restricting him to 38 disposals after he had 15 of them in the first quarter.

Hall will play only his fourth game for the season and first since the last time the Eagles played Carlton in round five’s Gather Round when he had 12 disposals and three tackles.

The 20-year-old has forced his way into the side on the back of a solid fortnight in the WAFL, averaging 30 disposals, six clearances and a goal in that time.

McCarthy makes his debut just weeks after being plucked from Richmond’s VFL program with the first pick in the mid-season rookie draft.

Allan will run out for only his fourth game for the Eagles after being taken with pick No.16 last year, but has played only 28 minutes in his past two appearances after being the tactical sub.

The only time he has played a full game in the AFL was in his debut against Melbourne in round eight, the same match he was suspended for a late hit on former Demons captain Jack Viney.

Eagles coach Andrew McQualter has said on multiple occasions during the week Allan would play a full game at either the AFL or WAFL level after he spent just eight minutes on the field against the Kangaroos.

“It’s been challenging for Bo the last few weeks being sub and getting such small game time, so we’re going to play him a full game somewhere this week,” McQualter said on Thursday.

“He won’t be sub, so we’ll just work through that. There’s potential that there is a spot there in the backline for him.”
