West Coast premiership star Dom Sheed announces retirement after 165 games following ACL injury
West Coast premiership hero Dom Sheed has announced his retirement, calling time on his 165-game career.
Sheed was ruled out before the start of the season after tearing his ACL in February, having played just 24 games since 2022 due to injury and form.
With the Eagles entering a new era under Andrew McQualter, Sheed ends his time in the blue and gold but will forever have his place in Eagles folklore for his grand-final winning goal in 2018.
Sheed was on the end of the play that started with Jeremy McGovern’s brave intercept mark in the dying moments of the contest, with Sheed proving a dead-eye from the boundary to put the Eagles in front.
“He’s got the most impossible goal, unbelievable! The most acute angle in footy, and Sheed has kicked a remarkable grand final goal,” Seven commentator Brian Taylor called.
With McGovern forced into medical retirement last month, it leaves Liam Ryan as the only player who was part of that play still active on the Eagles’ list.

“It has been an absolute privilege to represent the West Coast Eagles, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity this great footy club gave a skinny kid from Kalgoorlie,” Sheed said.
“To play for the club I grew up supporting has been a dream come true, but the relationships you build and memories you share from footy are what I will cherish most from my time in the game.
“There are so many people I would like to thank for helping me along the journey, first and foremost, my amazing family.”
“It hasn’t always been easy. There’s been plenty of ups and downs, and to finish up without being able to play alongside the boys this year due to injury has been tough.
“But my family have been there for me every step of the way, and I can’t thank my parents and my wife Brooke enough.”
Having endured a tough run of injures as West Coast entered the darkest period of their history, Sheed thanked the club supporters for sticking by him.
“I want to take the opportunity to send a special shout out to the members and supporters,” he said.
“I honestly believe West Coast has the most passionate fans in the AFL and they have supported me every step of the way, so thank you for everything.”
Born in Kalgoorlie, the Mines Rovers product moved to Perth at 16 to play for Subiaco, making his senior debut at just 17 at the end of 2012.

He captained WA at the under-18 championships the following year and won the Larke Medal as the best player of the tournament.
Sheed was taken at pick 11 in that year’s draft and made his AFL debut as a sub in round one 2014.
“Dom will be forever remembered for that one great moment in the grand final, but to us internally he is much more than that,” Eagles football manager Gavin Bell said.
“He was an old-school footballer - tough, competitive, driven to improve and he cared deeply about his teammates.
“Dom made the most of his assets as a player. He had an incredibly high footy IQ, the ability to read and understand the game, and a deadly left foot.
“As a life member and premiership player he can leave the game really proud of what he has achieved, and we wish him every success because he’s been a wonderful contributor to our club.”
