World’s toughest pub Pier Hotel sold amid ongoing buyback of properties in Port Hedland’s West End

BHP has bought the well-known Port Hedland pub Pier Hotel weeks after the retiring owner closed the venue. The Pier Hotel was reportedly made famous in the 1970s after journalist John Dyson wrote a feature article about the pub in UK newspaper The Sunday Telegraph — touted as the world’s toughest pub. The myth included a likely urban legend that the pub built in the late 19th century had the highest number of stabbings in a night. Perth Now reported in July that owner Lynne Taylor was pulling up stumps after 20 years. Most properties in the West End have been bought by resources companies amid an ongoing voluntary buyback scheme because the region has been plagued by dust from nearby export operations. It’s believed the Big Australian will not re-open the hotel but will maintain the property until a decision is made on its long-term future. The massive iron ore miner is negotiating with the State Government on the site’s future amid broader plans to develop a Maritime Precinct and West End Precinct Structure Plan for the area. BHP already owns two lots on The Esplanade with iron ore partners Mitsui and Itochu. The company pledged a big revamp of The Esplanade Hotel — where it is also the owner — in 2022. Ms Taylor was a major property owner on the strip through business Andraste Holdings.
