SWFL men’s: Bunbury end Augusta-Margaret River winning streak with 29-point win, Carey Park upset Donnybrook

Bunbury brought Augusta-Margaret River’s five-game winning streak to an end at Payne Park on Sunday, beating the Hawks by 29 points. The two teams were neck-and-neck for much of the day but a five-goal final term saw the Bulldogs move up to second on the ladder by securing a 15.10 (100) to 10.11 (71) victory. The competition’s leading goal-kicker Joel Houghton was quiet by his own lofty standards with two goals but a number of other Bulldogs stepped up, with Cooper Nitschke (four goals) leading the way among 10 individual goal-kickers as stars Harry Creasey and Denholm King showed their quality. In Sunday’s other game, Harvey Bulls notched up back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a thrilling four-point win over Collie at Harvey Oval. Key forward Jordan Strahan was again the star for the Bulls, kicking seven goals of the second consecutive week as his side held off a late Eagles charge to come away with a 10.6 (66) to 9.8 (62) victory. Strahan now sits second on the competition’s goal-kicking charts with 35 goals, behind only Houghton on 42. On Saturday at Kelly Park, Carey Park ensured they kept in touch with the finals places by beating Donnybrook by 24 points. Trailing by seven points at the main break, the hosts used a seven-goal to three run across the second half to power themselves to a 12.16 (88) to 9.10 (64) win. Panthers star Kelvin Lawrence was the best player afield with three goals in the win, while Ryan King slotted four in his first game of the season. Saturday’s other game saw a fast-finishing Busselton blow away Dunsborough by 74 points at Bovell Park. The visitors started well to lead by 13 points at the first interval but the story of the day was the final quarter, where the hosts piled on ten goals while holding the Sharks scoreless to secure a 17.15 (117) to 6.7 (43) result. Dynamic forward Liam Creighton was the star on the day for the Magpies with six goals.
