Cassius Turvey’s brutal killers Jack Brearley, Brodie Palmer to be sentenced after harrowing three-month trial

The men who chased down Cassius Turvey then bashed him with a metal pole are about to learn their fate, after being found guilty by a jury of murdering the Indigenous teen. The 15-year-old died from bleeding on the brain 10 days after he was attacked at an oval in Middle Swan on October 13, 2022 by a group of strangers accusing him and his friends of smashing Jack Brearley’s car windows. Brearley and Brodie Palmer blamed each other for inflicting the fatal blows and were both convicted last month following an epic three-month WA Supreme Court trial before Chief Justice Peter Quinlan. Mitchell Forth was instead found guilty of manslaughter and Brearley’s ex-girlfriend Aleesha Gilmore was acquitted of any involvement in the teen’s death. Sentencing submissions will be heard on Thursday, with Chief Justice Quinlan possibly handing down the sentences at a later date. Outside court after the verdicts, Cassius’ mother Mechelle Turvey said it had been extremely difficult listening to all “the lies” but she was happy with the outcome, although Gilmore had been “lucky”. “My son died for absolutely nothing. He had nothing to do with smashing Mr Brearley’s car windows. His life was taken ... He has finally got justice,” Ms Turvey said, fighting back tears. Prosecutors had argued Brearley hit the teenager with the pole, which had been ripped from a shopping trolley, but all four were guilty of murder because they were party to a common purpose – to “hunt” down and attack school-aged children with weapons. Forth had been at the oval but was not near the horrific assault while Gilmore had left the scene well beforehand.
