The Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together project visited Roebourne and Port Hedland for a four-day tour and workshop on May 28.

Danjoo Koorliny roughly translates from Noongar as ‘going together to the future’ or ‘walking together’.

The visit included a tour of Aboriginal cultural sites Murujuga and Millstream.

Two workshops also took place where community stakeholders and Pilbara Aboriginal elders attended.

Royal Life Saving WA community development senior manager Tim Turner helped orchestrate the visit.

Mr Turner said the meeting created a historic precedent.

“It is really significant in that we had some of the most eminent Noongar Aboriginal academic leaders and business leaders meet with Pilbara Aboriginal leaders and elders for the first time,” he said.

Pilbara Aboriginal Voice is comprised of recognised community leaders, with an aim to provide a strong community voice to influence policy reforms and tackle issues affecting Pilbara Aboriginal people.

The Walking Together project’s founders are Noel Nannup, Richard Walley, Colleen Hayward and Carol Innes.
