Hedland’s junior soccer players have surprised travelling Pilbara teams at the Pilbara Junior Soccer Championships.

Hedland Junior Soccer Association president Tony Roberts said the champs were a big success over the Spinifex Spree weekend with a 2-2 drawn exhibition match between Hedland vets and Karratha under-17s played under carnival rockets.

“The competition was excellent ... it rotates between Hedland, Newman and Karratha; this is the biggest competition we have ever had with invited teams from Broome and Tom Price as well,” he said.

Karratha took home most of the glory at the comp, winning every age division against Newman in the under-9s and under-11s against Port Hedland in the under-13s and playing off against their own under-17s team in the under 15s.

“We’ve had some of the biggest registrations in recent years, this year we have had 180,” Mr Roberts said.

All our teams were filled with four or five subs for each team so it’s getting bigger and I think a competition like that will encourage more registrations next year.”

Hedland’s soccer players will now look to start their preparations for country week down south.
