Five juveniles will face court following a spate of alleged deliberately lit fires in South Hedland.

The juveniles, aged between 13 and 16, are facing 20 charges in total, with each charged with four counts of lighting a fire likely to cause injury, an offence under the bushfire act.

Police will allege the youths started a total of 10 fires, which first started near the CBD.

CCTV footage from the area allowed police to track the suspects to a vacant property in South Hedland.

Officers said community members helped to put out the fires before they could spread any further.

South Hedland acting Senior Sergeant Sarah Clarke said it was a serious offence which had the potential to cause a significant amount of damage.

The juveniles are due to appear in South Hedland Children’s Court later this month.
