personal side of mental trauma
Cities and towns all around WA united to break the stigma behind emotional wellbeing and suicide last week, and Hedland was no exception.
WA Mental Health Week was embraced from October 6-12, with events held throughout the Pilbara town to raise awareness of services available for those struggling with mental illness.
Among them was a community tea hosted by IBN, with health providers, police and people affected by mental health and suicide sharing their personal stories and battles.
South Hedland Police youth crime intervention officer Sen. Const Scott Neale, drag performer Ayleesha Tryed and Wirraka Maya Health Service program co-ordinator Jennifer Geary, gave emotional speeches.
IBN chief executive Lorraine Injie said: “There have been 10-12 suicides within the last six months in the Pilbara and that cannot continue.
IBN was launched in 2001 as the agreement between BHP and the IBN Claim Group, the Yinhawangka, Banyjima and Nyiyaparli people of the Pilbara.
