Five Pilbara projects to share in more than $700k funding from State Govt’s latest RED grants

A Roebourne-based media company is set deliver Australia’s first all-Indigenous online streaming service after receiving a cash injection of more than $100,000 from the State Government. Weerianna Street Media Pty Ltd is among the five Pilbara organisations to share in more than $700,000 in the fourth round of the State Government’s regional economic development grant. The organisation will use the $110,000 grant towards the establishment of IndigiFlix, which is set to become the nation’s first all-Indigenous online subscription-based streaming service for Indigenous films, documentaries, TV series and music events. Weerianna Street Media sole director Tyson Mowarin said the funding was a big step forward for his aspirations, the company, the community and the Australian Indigenous film making industry. “We’re going to house premium Indigenous films, films that have done the festival circuit either around Australia or around the world,” he said. “My aspiration for IndigiFlix would be to create the world’s largest depository of premium Indigenous films.” Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the program was helping Pilbara communities embrace new, diverse business, job and training opportunities. Other successful recipients include Kuarlu Marine Charters, which will establish a marine charter operation in Onslow with the $250,000 funding, Karratha Earthmoving and Sand Supplies, which will put its $150,000 grant into establishing a virtual reality simulator and training modules, and Tender Relief Online, which was awarded $100,000 to build and promote an interactive software product and mobile app. Nearly $100,000 will go to the Town of Port Hedland to establish a business fibre zone which will enhance bandwidth reliability for intensive IT applications, support local business performance and achieve greater service equity with Perth CBD.
