A project to build four new dwellings for Murujuga National Park rangers has received State Government support, with a $1.78 million grant supplied to the Pilbara-based Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation.

The funding is part of a broader $10.4m State Government investment supporting seven projects in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

Housing and Works Minister John Carey said the State Government was partnering with Aboriginal community controlled organisations like MAC to deliver safe and secure housing in regional WA.

“This $1.78m investment for new homes in the Pilbara will provide high-quality accommodation for the MAC rangers, supporting their vital work protecting a highly significant cultural landscape,” he said.

“These four homes will be built by a local Pilbara contractor, supporting local construction jobs and delivering long-term housing outcomes for park rangers.”

Karratha-based Timik Developments has been appointed to build the four new dwellings, which will house the MAC ranger operations manager and other rangers upon completion.

MAC represents more than 1000 members from five traditional custodial groups from the West Pilbara.

The organisation’s mission is to preserve and protect their land, heritage and culture while transforming the lives of their community.

Last July, the Murujuga Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage List in recognition of its global significance.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said the investment in Murujuga National Park would boost local jobs and housing.

“I’m proud to be part of a government that is ensuring our environment is protected and that people in the Pilbara have access to opportunities and housing,” he said.

Construction is expected to start in February.
