Man charged with attempted stealing of police car, burglary, after running at police while armed with syringe

A Forrestfield man has been charged over a terrifying ordeal where he allegedly charged at police while armed with a syringe, moments after he tried to steal their car and scaled the roof of a home. Police said the ordeal started about 4.45pm on Sunday when the 23-year-old accused was spotted allegedly trying to break into a home on Glendowner Street in Perth. About 10 minutes later — after failing to enter the home — the man managed to enter another property on Chelmsford Road in North Perth. It’s alleged the man threatened the occupant of the home with a weapon before he stole property and fled the scene. A police spokeswoman allege the man then entered another home before threatening occupants with an “uncapped syringe”. “A short time later, the accused left the residence and jumped a fence, climbing onto the roof of another home on Chelmsford Road,” she said. When police found the accused it is alleged he entered a police car before attempting to start the vehicle. “The accused then allegedly ran directly at police officers brandishing an uncapped syringe with a clear liquid inside,” she said. Police officers managed to arrest the man before he was transported to hospital. It is believed police had to deploy a taser to restrain the man. It is unknown what was inside the syringe at the time. He has been charged with 10 offences, including being armed in a way to cause fear, home burglary and preparing a prohibited drug for use. He will face Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.
