Today might be a good day to get your washing done — and bring it in off the clothes line before tomorrow.

Perth is set for a drenching across the next couple of days with a very high chance of rain on Tuesday and the chance of a thunderstorm.

The metropolitan area is looking to get between 15mm and 35mm of rain on Tuesday and between 5mm and 15mm on Wednesday.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Jess Lingard said there is a cold front coming through, bringing with it a chance of thunderstorms and the possibility of severe weather across metropolitan area.

“Most likely with some damaging winds and some heavy rainfall but there is a chance of some hailstones with some of those thunderstorms starting off fairly early tomorrow morning,” she said.

The drenching is part of a wider trend this winter where Perth is set to beat its long term rainfall for each month of winter — the first time it would have happened in nearly three decades.

The long-term average for August is 122.7mm — and with just less than half the month still to go and more rain on the way, it is sure to be beaten.

The wind will pick up to during the next few days, with northerly gusts 15km/h to 20km/h turning north-westerly 20km/h and 30km/h during Tuesday morning.

Wednesday will see slightly windier conditions, with gusts tending north-westerly 15km/h to 25km/h and increasing up to 35km/h during the morning before becoming lighter.

Cooler conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the week, with rain on Thursday and Friday.

Saturday is forecast to be partly cloudy.
