Perth has shivered through one of its coldest succession of mornings in May in years, with temperatures plunging across the metropolitan area and beyond.
Residents have woken to bitterly cold conditions over the past few days, with Perth recording its frostiest May morning in seven years with a minimum of just 2.5C recorded at 6.56am on Sunday.
The last time Perth dipped that low in May was on May 19, 2019.
The icy snap continued into Monday, with Perth recording another chilly minimum of 4.5C at 3.24am, while Jandakot dropped even lower to 2C at 7.22am. Th city recorded a minimum of 4C on Saturday.
Cold temperatures were felt right across the metropolitan area on Monday, with single-digit readings along the coast and near-freezing conditions further inland.
The coldest reading came from Wandering, about 110km south-east of Perth, where temperatures plunged to a frigid -1.5C.
It followed an even colder morning on Sunday when the mercury fell to -3.2C — the town’s coldest May temperature in 14 years.
Other chilly conditions on Monday morning were felt in Perisher Valley with -1.1C, Bridgetown (-0.4C), Norseman (0.2C) and Thredbo (0.3C).
The cold conditions were driven by calm winds and clear overnight skies, creating ideal conditions for temperatures to sharply drop.
Despite the cold snap, Perth’s weather has fluctuated wildly this month, with temperatures ranging from a low of 2.5C to a high of 28.3C in the first 24 days of May.
