Horrified residents rushed into action after spotting a toddler dangling from a third-floor balcony in Bogotá moments before disaster struck.
Shocking footage captured the terrifying scene as the two-year-old boy clung to the outside ledge of the apartment building while neighbours below screamed in panic and scrambled to save him.
For several agonising seconds, the child could be seen hanging high above the ground, gripping the narrow balcony edge with his hands as residents gathered underneath, fearing he was about to fall.
Witnesses raced to collect blankets, jackets and thick clothing from nearby apartments before stretching them out beneath the balcony in a desperate attempt to cushion the child’s landing.
As the crowd braced below, the boy suddenly lost his grip and plunged from the building.
Miraculously, the makeshift safety net helped break the toddler’s fall, with stunned residents managing to prevent the incident from becoming a tragedy.
Emergency crews were called to the apartment complex in the Colombian capital shortly afterwards and the child was transported to hospital for assessment.
Police later confirmed the boy had escaped without serious injuries despite the terrifying fall.
The Sun reported that authorities said the toddler had been left alone inside the apartment at the time while his father briefly went out with his brother to buy cigarettes.
“I went out for a moment with my brother to buy some cigarettes,” the father told local reporters after the incident.
He added, “We wanted to smoke them outside so we would not fill the apartment with smoke because there is a small child there.
“When we came back from the shop, the child was already on the balcony and everything had happened.”
One resident who first noticed the child said he immediately feared the boy was in danger after spotting him leaning over the edge without an adult nearby.
“What I imagined was that a child should not be there alone and should be with someone,” he said.
“I started talking to him, he started turning around and he was left holding on only with his arms.”
The dramatic rescue has since spread widely online, with many praising the quick-thinking neighbours whose actions likely saved the child’s life.
Bogotá Metropolitan Police officer Javier Cardenas confirmed the toddler had been hanging from the balcony for several seconds before falling.
“A two-year-old child fell from the third floor of a home after being suspended for several seconds from the balcony,” he said.
“The community managed to catch the child before he hit the ground.
“He was taken to a medical centre and, according to the report, he did not present any serious injury.”
The boy’s father later said his son remained in good condition following the ordeal.
“The child has no fractures, he is in good condition, and now we have to wait for the follow-up that the ICBF has to carry out,” he said.
Colombian social services are now investigating the incident.
