Sue Ellery: Synergy signs on a former Minister, as post-election appointments continue

Sue Ellery has been appointed to the board of Synergy, six months after the State election marked her retirement from politics.
As a non-executive director she will be paid $72,657 annually.
Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the former Finance and Commerce Minister will add considerable experience to Synergy, at a crucial time during WA’s transition out of coal.
“I am pleased she accepted the appointment,” she said.
“As one of the most experienced and respected leaders in the State, Sue Ellery’s insights and experience will be invaluable to Synergy as the organisation works to deliver the Cook Government’s clean energy transition, procure more local content and support customers experiencing hardship.”
Ms Ellery is also earning at least $32,292 as a non-executive director on the Keystart board.

Her appointment to Keystart and former Energy Minister Bill Johnston’s appointment as Burswood Park President in July fuelled Opposition claims of “jobs for mates,” after the Cook Government reduced the remuneration waiting period for former MP’s from a year to six months.
Mr Johnston has also since been appointed to the State’s Gaming and Wagering Commission.
On Thursday, the State Government again defended the changes to rules for former politicians.
“These days, former members of Parliament often continue their working lives at the end of their terms,” a Government spokesman said.
“Many feel they have more to give back to their community and their State. Former members of Parliament bring unique experience, perspective and skills to the wide variety of State Government boards and committees.
“State Government boards and committees include a diverse range of appointments, including people with industry experience, experience in our community sectors, prominent West Australians, public servants and former Federal and State members of Parliament from across the political divide.”
