  • US President Donald Trump has delivered his first public address since the conflict erupted, saying the US and Israel could not wait any longer before striking Iran. The attack on Iran was “our last, best chance to strike” and to eliminate the “intolerable threats posed by this sick and sinister regime”, Mr Trump said.

‘Too late’ to talk to with Iran: Trump

US President Donald Trump has taken to social media to say Tehran wanted to talk but it was “too late”.

“Their air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in response to an opinion piece.

Impact of chaotic and fast-moving conflict spreads

Here is a snippet from the Editorial in today’s Digital Edition of The Nightly.

As the Middle East conflict widens, the impact is already flowing through to this country.

There are an estimated 115,000 Australians stranded in the region after the cancellation of thousands of commercial flights.

While the Government has pinned its hopes on those flights resuming soon, on Tuesday it revealed it had set up a task-force to evacuate Australians if the situation worsened and put them in further danger.

And Iran said on Tuesday it had closed off the Strait of Hormuz through which about 20 per cent of the world’s crude oil passes. Motorists will already be feeling the impact at the bowser.

Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock has suggested that the conflict could worsen Australia’s inflation crisis and even spark another interest rate rise in two weeks’ time before higher oil prices slow an already sluggish economy and push up unemployment.

As to the actual strikes on Iran, the Albanese Government has been adamant about Australia not being involved.

Hezbollah’s media office have stated the group is willing to fight “open war” against Israel, after honouring over 15 months of a ceasefire deal with the nation directly south of Lebanon.

Senior official Mohamoud Komati says Hezbollah has no choice but to “return to resistance” since the ceasefire which ended the group’s war with Israel in November 2024.

Mr Komati also criticised the Lebanese government for labelling Hezbollah’s strikes against Israel illegal, saying Israel has been airstriking parts of Lebanon since the ceasfire was announced.
