SOCCER : Follow all the news and updates from the Socceroos’ clash with USA in Seattle, including coverage from The West’s football expert Ben Smith on the ground.

That’s all for now

Our men on the ground in Ben Smith and Craig O’Donoghue will have all the fallout from the ground in Seattle so keep across thewest.com.au for all the latest.

Thanks for joining us this morning as all eyes now turn to Paraguay at a much more agreeable 10am kick off on Friday June 26.

Shades of 2006?

“It’s very similar, we had a great start against Japan but then had a tough game against Brazil and knew we had to get something from the last game,” Harry Kewell says.

“Guus Hiddink understand the Australian way that if we defensively get it right that we’re built on freedom, and he knew with the attacking force that he had he allowed us to go and play.

“This is what we need to see from our last game.”

Popovic speaks

“It’s a good question (on the start) I don’t know if it was the occasion but we looked sluggish and conceded two soft goals,” he says.

“But I think the reaction in the second half was outstanding but at this level you can’t give up those opportunities.

“There’s a lot of players here for the first time without this experience, but the second half gives something to build on.”

“We felt the referee wasn’t blowiing our way but at the end of the day we weren’t good enough in the second half.”

Key stats

US possesion 56 per cent to Australia’s 33.

US had 10 shots to five but both teams had two shots on target.

USA had 524 passes to Australia’s 308.

A tale of two halves

You won’t see Australia play a much worse 45 minutes than in that first half against Seattle.

It was made all the more disappointing by how well they played in the second as Volapto and Metcalfe in particular put the USA under all sorts of pressure.

Australia proabbly should have converted at least one of their opportunities and they connect afford to start like that against Paraguay.

FULL TIME USA 2 AUS 1

That’s the game as USA book their place in the knockout as Australia, despite a massively improved second half couldn’t recover from some early horrors.

Perth turns green and gold

Despite a brutal 3am kick-off, Socceroos fans have braved brutaally cold conditions in Perth to support Australia.

Six minutes of added time

Can Australia take some souvenirs from Seattle?

Yellow card for Chris Riochards for a ‘cynical foul on Irankunda.

Now the referee is down for cramps!

Triple yellow card

Tensions are threatining to boil over late here.
