Chimera Ensemble brought musical joy to one church in the western suburbs on a chilly Sunday afternoon in June.
On June 21, the four talented musicians performed piano quartets by Mozart and Schumann in the Church of the Resurrection, in Swanbourne.
The concert, Light and Shade, explored the dramatic contrasts between playfulness and darkness through music written for violin, viola, cello and piano.
The performers were pianist Liam Wooding, violinist Rebecca Glorie, violist Daniel Schmitt and cellist Melinda Forsythe. They began with Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493.
The ensemble then played as a piano trio, (violin, cello and piano), in Piazzolla’s ‘Winter’ from “Four Seasons in Buenos Aires” an appropriate choice of music which celebrated the Winter Solstice.
The concert finished with a performance of Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 47 .
The musicians balanced technical power with deep intimacy, admirably demonstrating the contrast between joyful, light energy with lush, rich, melodic beauty.
After rapturous applause, the audience joined the musicians and were treated to afternoon tea.
