One of Hedland’s leading boxing clubs is ramping up training as it leads into its first sparring and development night.

Unit 2 Boxing has been training three days a week as it prepares for the first event on March 24.

There will be 10 sparring bouts, of all age groups, at the community sporting event.

Club secretary John Van Maanen said the night would be a casual and relaxed family-orientated event.

“Sparring and development nights are to encourage new fighters into the ring,” he said.

“There are no judges or trophies and no winners on the night, just sports people showing skill and abilities in the discipline of boxing.”

The night will be held as a lead- up event to boxing matches in Port Hedland and Whim Creek later this year.

Unit 2 Boxing will now train regularly three nights a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 5.30pm to 7pm at the JD Hardie Centre in South Hedland.

“Boxing is for everyone. If you are interested, you are more than welcome,” Mr Van Maanen said.

“Any boxers who wishes to participate (in the sparring and development night) will need to be a member of Boxing WA.

“Registration forms can be sought from (the club).”
